Newport RFC are delighted to announce that their captain for the new season will be star outside half Matt O’Brien. Matt takes over from long term skipper Rhys Jenkins who will still be featuring in the back row and be a part of the squad leadership team.
Matt has been in the famous Newport No.10 jersey for many years and is well used to setting the example for others to follow. His leadership skills are excellent as demonstrated by his coaching roles with both the Dragons Academy and Wales age grade teams.
Matt knows only too well the importance of his new role and is excited by the challenge. He said, ‘It’s a great honour to be asked to captain the side. I am very proud to be captain of my home town club. Rhys has done a great job over the last few seasons, so I’m looking forward to continuing that good work. I have loved my 8 seasons at the club and am looking forward to getting back into things with the great young squad that we have. It feels like we have been away for such a long time.’
Newport’s first pre season friendly is on Saturday at Pontypridd with a 14:30 kick off. Come along and see OB lead the team and have a look for some new faces in our ranks.
