Match Report

Llandovery 36 Newport 0 (HT:17-0)

Richard Dale on one of his many runs at Church Bank

A mad 29 mins effectively brought the curtain down on Newport's disappointing season but in way they would rather forget. Early Newport pressure not for the first time this season failed to produce points and they conceded two break away unconverted tries on 3 and 11 mins by Llanelli wing Ifan Evans and flanker Marc de Marigny. Newport captain Dai Pattison was so incensed with the way that all  decisions appeared to be going against Newport that he vented his feelings on the officials only to be red-carded by referee Phil Connett on 29 mins. From there there was no way back for Newport. Interestingly Newport were not given a single penalty in the 44 min first half and it took a further 25 mins of the 2nd half before Mr Connett finally gave Newport a penalty by this tome Llandovery had completed their scoring at 36-0!

The score was still 10-0 when in the 4rth min of injury time in the first half wing Viv Jenkins raced over for a try converted by Morgan.

NB: Dai Pattison's red card squashed on appeal by WRU Disciplinary Panel in June 2008.

Once again Newport failed to use possession behind the scrum with the backs showing no flair or penetration. There were times when the ball was “passed” directly into touch..

Back-row Richard Dale tried his level best in the 7 man pack and Mike Leaman had his best game to date for the Black & Ambers but they were effectively on their own and when left Viv Jenkins finished off a sweeping move on the 4th minute of first half injury time for Morgan to convert, the match was all over. It was just a question of whether or not Newport would manage a consolation score and how many points that Llandovery would run in.

On the 3rd minute after the restart Llandovery fly-half Gareth Morgan ran in a try from the half-way line for the bonus point. Flanker Gareth Williams and outside half Gareth Morgan scored again – both converted to make the score 36-0 on 62 mins. Stewart Maguire was carried from the field after being knocked unconscious. Fortunately the injury was not serious. Surprisingly there were no further scores and the curtain came down on a disastrous season for Newport which meant they finished on  7th position edging out Bedwas and Llanelli on wins total.
