Newport crashed to their biggest league defeat since losing at the Gnoll 35-52 on May 23rd 2003 with a truly woeful performance at the Old Parish. It was also Maesteg's biggest ever win over Newport.
Maesteg had all to play as they are fighting to avoid relegation but few Newport players stood out and certainly not in the backs although wing Richard Fussell did run in Newport’s only 2 tries. Matthew Veater tried hard before leaving the field with an eye injury early in the 2nd half and Chris Davies, who finished limping, and Richard Dale worked hard. A sixth-min penalty by fly half James Dixon gave Maesteg a lead they always held. After 16 mins a Dan Griffiths pass was intercepted by Roddy Boobyer to score under the posts. Left wing Richard Fussell popped up in the centre to score his first try but it was 22-5 at HT after tries by prop Gareth Edwards and wing Gareth John.
James Dixon kicked a penalty came after 15 mins of the 2nd half, but Richard Dale made the break for Fussell to sprint clear for a try converted by Griffiths converted. Dixon then kicked a penalty moved forward 10m after Ian Evans questioned the penalty for bringing down the scrum and in the last three mins Maesteg ran in tries by full back Lloyd Warner and wing Neil Dixon, both converted by James Dixon.
