Cardiff missed an early chance when the forwards lost possession going over the line. This missed opportunity resulted in a try at the other end for Newport wing Will Kershaw-Naylor. Newport No 10 Aled Thomas kicked two penalties to increase the lead to 13-0 but Cardiff then pulled back to 13-10 at HT thanks to a Chris Anderson and a try from centre Jonathan Hill. A second Anderson penalty after the resumption made the score 13-13 and then he gave Cardiff the lead in the 50th min with another penalty. Newport levelled at 16-16 via a third Thomas penalty but then crucially Cardiff No 10 Anderson missed a 30 metre attempt in the 62nd min. Newport prop Dai Patterson and flanker Sam Waldron were yellow carded leaving Newport down to 13 men at one stage and near the end Cardiff flanker was also sin-binned. Newport then sealed the match two minutes into injury time when Aled Thomas sent over the winning penalty from 40 metres for a fortunate win.
