2017/2018 Principality Premiership
Newport 29 v 3 Bargoed
17 April 2018 - Rodney Parade, Newport

Match Preview

This game against Bargoed should have been played on Saturday 7th April but Newport were involved in the National Cup semi-final against Llandovery.  That win means squeezing another match into a busy fixture list.  We thank our visitors for agreeing to the new date.

Bargoed’s last game was abandoned at half time due to a spectator needing resuscitation after collapsing.  The medical teams of the home team and the visitors, Ebbw Vale, are to be congratulated for their prompt, professional action in a situation that was very, very serious.  The good news is that the patient is continuing his recovery in hospital.  Well done to all concerned.

The last time Bargoed played at Rodney Parade they shocked the home side with a convincing victory.  In wet conditions with a slippery ball they played basic rugby and took advantage of any mistakes.  In contrast, The Black & Ambers travelled to Bargoed Park and played a controlled game on a bitterly cold evening and came away with a win.  So it’s honours even with one game to play.

Newport have one eye on the cup final and will continue to rotate the squad as they prepare for their big day in Cardiff.  Long term absentees Garin Harris and captain, Rhys Jenkins, have started light training and could soon be ready to play but this game is probably too early.  Team will be selected after fitness checks.

Newport make changes but put out a strong team and bench.
