2017/2018 Principality Premiership
Cardiff 37 v 22 Newport
27 October 2017 - Cardiff Arms Park, Cardiff

Match Preview

Games between these teams are never dull. Always played in good spirit with both sides going flat out to get the win.  We don't get the huge crowds now that this fixture used to get but the result is still important to the players of both teams with even the youngsters sensing the history and tradition attached to this game.

Cardiff started the season well with their victory over the Black & Ambers at Rodney Parade starting a winning run of four games.  It was a surprise when they came unstuck at Cardiff Arms Park against Ebbw Vale and then two further defeats followed.  So this is a big game for our hosts - win and they are back on track, lose and their losing run continues.

For Newport it is very much the same with form very difficult to predict.  Our last home game was a loss to Bargoed and we just couldn't get into the game with the visitors playing basic rugby in the wet conditions and cashing in on our mistakes.  But then we travel to Pandy Park to play Cross Keys and come away with a win.  Like Cardiff this is a big game for us and the result could be an indication of where we are going this season.

The Newport coaching team are hoping that a couple of players on the injury list will be available and the team will be selected after Thursday's training session.

Haydn Palmer gets the 14 jersey following his try-scoring return against Cross Keys and Haydn Simons keeps the outside half position after a man-of-the-match performance in the same game.  The pack has a settled look and the mobile back five will be needed on the fast surface at CAP.  Arwel Robson takes a place on the bench after a successful return last Saturday for the Premier Select team.

Newport: Matt Prosser, Henry palmer, Garin Harris, Morgan Burgess, Joe Bartlett, Alex Everett, Kyle Tayler, Rhys Jenkins (c), Owen Davies, Haydn Simons, Harri Lang, Tom Pascoe, Chay Smith, Haydn Palmer, Geraint O'Driscoll.

Replacements: Will Evans, Phil Price, Tom Piper, Rhys Creswell, Joe Cullimore, Ryan James, Arwel Robson, Adam Sabri.

Kick off:  7:15 PM
