Match Preview

NEWPORT vs. BARGOED

Newport welcome Bargoed RFC to Rodney Parade on Sunday for our sixth Premier League fixture of the season.  The visitors have just one win this campaign but it was a good win - away to our local rivals, Cross Keys. Is this the first time that our visitors have played here?  It could very well be.  Let’s hope that they enjoy their visit – but not too much!

The Black & Ambers return to Rodney Parade after two thrilling away games – a last kick victory over Ebbw Vale and a 43 – 33 loss to Merthyr.  A losing bonus point after scoring five tries left the team with mixed feelings and they know that a better start to the game would probably have led to a different result.  The fifth try could very well be the ‘Try of the Season’ after passing through 26 pairs of hands and involving reverse passes, flip passes and one behind-the-back pass.  Sadly it wasn’t good enough to get into the Principality’s try of the week.

Props Garin Harris and John Lavender start with Adam Brown and Joe Bartlett returning in the second row.  Captain Rhys Jenkins takes the number 8 position.  Owen Davies and Matt O’Brien are the half-backs with just one change in the threequarters – Curtis Ayling getting the wing position after scoring the ‘Try of the Season’ last time out.  A strong bench sees last Saturday’s Man of the Match, Alex Everett covering the back row.
