2016/2017 Principality Premiership
Neath 14 v 32 Newport
20 May 2017 - The Gnoll, Neath

Match Preview

The last game of the season and Newport travel to the Gnoll in good spirit after their last gasp win against Llanelli.  A poor start to the season meant that they were always playing ‘catch-up’ but the results started to come and they now find themselves with a chance to get a trophy.  Neath were themselves slow starters but they are now firmly on track and will be formidable opponents. Saturday’s game will be a classic Welsh club game with both sides able to play a tight game if required but both able to spread the ball and play a high tempo game if the conditions are right.

The Black & Ambers will be without a couple of players who have been very influential this year. Rhys Jenkins picked up an injury in training last week and Matt O’Brien is unavailable. Luckily for Newport the players who took over on Saturday, Reuben Tucker and Geraint O’Driscoll, both put in outstanding performances and contributed fully to the win.

The front five has a settled look and Rhodri Jones is back at his best position, number six.  Lennon Greggains gets the nod at seven after making a big impact last time out.  Ryan James is chosen at nine to partner Geraint O’Driscoll at ten.  Tom Pascoe and Chay Smith are the centres with Jon Morris on one wing and Elliot Frewen, returning from Wales Sevens duty on the other.  Llywarch Ap Myrddin gets the fifteen position. Among the replacements Joe Cullimore returns after recovering from serious injury sustained just as he was starting to make a mark in the Newport jersey. Haydn Simons covers the ten position after showing promise when given some game time.
